“The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” ~ J.S. Bach
Marsha Schlangen is a Licensed and Certified Music Instructor. She is the owner of Voice Works Music Studio in North Spokane offering training in Voice, Piano, Guitar, Ukulele, and the Percussive Arts.
A vocal performance major at Eastern Washington University, Marsha now has over 35 years of experience in the areas of the performing arts and music education. She is a current member of MTNA, as well as MTA of Washington (Spokane Chapter). She was employed by ESD 101 after graduation and is currently a Community Based Instructor for both Mead, and Loon Lake School Districts, and has clearance privileges/is on payroll for St. George’s School.
Marsha has been a Teacher/Director for Christian Youth Theatre-Spokane since 1996, has served on the Board of Directors, and now volunteers as the “in-house” drummer/percussionist for their productions.
Marsha hosted a cable show called “The Builders Blocks” showcasing local area builders and contractors, which aired on XFinity. She also does private contract acting work in commercial film on various projects for iMpro Professional Media in the Spokane Area. A former title-holder, she serves as a judge in the Miss America, and Mrs. Washington pageant systems. She is a vocalist and drummer in local churches, and a session drummer for various community theater productions. She is also a member of an all-girl band called “Door of Hope”. The touring group offers concerts and leads worship for surrounding area churches and conferences. Their most challenging (and possibly most rewarding) work was their interstate prison ministry in both Washington and Oregon State correctional facilities.
Marsha and her husband Brent have been married for 40 years. Their family continues to grow as they have two adult children, an awesome son-in-law, a beautiful and wonderful daughter in law, two beautiful grand “Littles”, a rescue mutt named Bella, and two “grand-doggers”, a frenchie (Steve’s family), and an English bulldog (Christiina’s family). Several years ago she earned her motorcycle endorsement, as she and Brent both loved to ride. Brent spends the winter riding Fat Bikes in the snow, snow shoeing, and x-country skiing, while Marsha enjoys the warmth of the studio where her toys are. They both look forward to warmer weather so that they can ride, kayak, hike, and scout the mountains in the Jeep. She loves dogs, people, music, and teaching.
About piano methods she says: “ I struggled all my life to learn piano. I loved music but faked and failed my way through torturous piano lessons as a child. I eventually returned as an adult, desperately determined to hone my skills in order to accompany my voice students. When I discovered Simply Music, and later, Piano Pronto, I knew these were the piano methods I had been seeking all my life, and desired for my students. They not only filled in the gaps for me personally, but my piano students and their parents report they can’t wait to come to lessons. My voice students who combine their vocal training with piano lessons experience the joy and freedom of accompanying themselves. An added bonus: they will never again have to pay an accompanist to teach them their part!
My goal is to foster a life-long love of playing, singing, learning, and collaboration. Music is beneficial for EVERYONE…especially in strange and stressful times.
